The hotels, residenciales, and agencies listed on the Visitor Guides pages are not necessarily recommended by the EIF. They are provided here for your convenience. Be aware that some may not be up to U.S. or European standards. When you e-mail or phone, be sure to ask questions you deem important — e.g.: Is hot water included? Is continental breakfast included in the price? Etc. The difference between a hotel and a residencial is supposedly based on the number of rooms and type of accommodations. All hotels have rooms with private baths. Often the residenciales do also. However, it is good to inquire in advance if booking with a residenciale. The larger hotels have swimming pools and accept credit cards (e.g., Gomero, Hanga Roa, Hotu Matua, Iorana, Manavai, Manutara, O'tai, and Taha Tai). You can opt for pension completa (room and three meals) or media pension (room with two meals). These options are more costly, but keep in mind that meals at the island's restaurants can be expensive. A large percentage of food is flown or shipped in from Chile, adding to the prices. Prices for hotels and residenciales vary with the season. December-March it is "high" season, and prices are much higher. In the austral Winter (June-August), few tourists are on the island so prices are lower, and you may be able to bargain with the residenciales. Prices are supposed to include continental breakfast (coffee, bread and jam, maybe fruit). It is a good idea to verify this; always ask in advance. A representative from your hotel should meet your plane, if they have advance notice of your arrival. In case they do not, take a taxi. You don't need an address; the name of your destination should be sufficient. If you find your hotel or residenciale is not suitable, find another one and move. You are not locked into something substandard. Many tourists "shift" from one place to another if they don't like their accommodations. While we have included addresses of the hotels or residenciales, there are few street signs and, recently, the names of two of the main streets were switched (we swear we are not making this up). So hotels that were on Policarpo Toro Street are now located on Atamu Tekena Street (and vice versa) although they have not physically moved. This is very "Rapanui," and very confusing. Islanders don't use street names (this is a Western concept), just the name of the establishment. Spanish is spoken on the island, along with some English and a little French and German (depending on the restaurant or hotel). There are at least 60 hotels and residenciales. Some have e-mail, others have URLs for the Web, some have both. Many locations have a dual phone/fax number; some do not have a fax at all. Bear in mind that businesses on the island, phone and fax numbers, Web URLs, and e-mail addresses are subject to change. Be patient and persistent if you don't receive a response the first time. You can direct dial to Easter Island. From the USA, dial 011-56 (for Chile); 32 (for the area), followed by the number 2 (the addition of the number 2 is a development effective August 5, 2006), and then the number listed below. Nearly all Island phone numbers begin with "100", although a newer batch of numbers now begins with the prefix "551". This page is updated regularly by readers and island operators. Please notify us of any needed corrections. Note: Bold entries in the "www/e-mail" column are clickable links. The WWW links will take you to the Web site of the hotel or residenciale. The e-mail links will launch your default e-mail client (e.g., Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora).
