Easter Island is in the same time zone as Mountain Standard Time (USA). However, Chile has imposed an artificial two-hour "daylight saving time" on the island so that the island time is closer to that of the mainland. This puts Easter Island two hours behind Chilean time. What this means to the visitor to Easter Island is that the time according to clocks and watches has little correlation with what the sun is doing. If your watch tells you it is 7:00 am, it is only 5:00 am by the sun. Tours that start at 9:00 am are really getting off by 7:00 am "sun time." This provides for some long evenings. Keep that in mind when taking photographs: the long evening light is good for taking shots at many of the sites, such as Akivi and the quarry, Rano Raraku, and 'Orongo. The best time to get good pictures at 'Anakena is early morning when the sun is on the faces of the statues. |
