Car rentals average US$50-60 for eight hours. Prices will be higher if you keep your car overnight. A van runs around US$125 per day. Gasoline is approximately $1.50 per gallon; there is one gas station on the island, located on the road that runs west past the airport (called Hotu Matua).

The island now has a staggering 120 taxis on its roads. Prices vary by season and time of day. You can rent bicycles and motorcycles. It is a good idea to have an International Driver's License. US dollars are accepted.

You can rent a horse, also. Prices vary with the owner and the beast itself. Islanders don't usually rent their good horses, and often they come with homemade saddles that are pure agony. Rentals run from $10 for half-day, upward. If the horse's owner comes along as a guide, there is a charge for that as well. While picturesque and adventuresome, getting around to see the sites on horseback is not very efficient. It can take hours to reach some of the sites via horseback.
