William Mulloy Library

Easter Island

The William Mulloy Library on Easter Island  is named for the late Dr. William Mulloy, an anthropologist whose research and restoration projects on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) have contributed both to the recovery of the island's cultural history and the economic progress it enjoys today. The Mulloy Library (Biblioteca William Mulloy), formerly located at the Fonck Museum in Viña del Mar, Chile, has now been  installed at the Father Sebastian Englert Museum of Anthropology (MAPSE) on the island.

Dr. Mulloy's private collection forms the core of this scientific research library. Under the care and direction of the Easter Island Foundation, the library has made acquisitions to its original collection and continued to grow since Dr. Mulloy's death in 1978. In January of 2000, the Easter Island Foundation turned the entire collection over to the National Administration of Libraries, Archives, and Museums of Chile (Dirección de Bibiliotecas, Archivos y Museos). This Chilean governmental agency has re-catalogued the collection. The Library has been dedicated and is now operational.

The Library's mission is threefold:

(1) to support the field work of archaeologists, anthropologists, linguists, ethnologists and other scholars who come to Easter Island for research purposes;

(2) to promote the conservation and study of the cultural patrimony of the Rapa Nui people; and

(3) to provide broad access within the island community to the best scholarly resources in Rapa Nui and Polynesian studies. To this end, the Mulloy Library actively seeks the support of friends and scholars willing to contribute to our development.

Scholars and friends may contribute texts, journals, maps, field notes, slides, photographs or financial support to the Mulloy Library. In Chile, contributions designated for the Biblioteca William Mulloy may be made to MAPSE. In the United States, tax deductible donations may be made to the Easter Island Foundation. In Europe, the rest of Latin America or Japan contributions may be made to the Order of Friars.
