Biblioteca William Mulloy
The William Mulloy Library

Dr. Mulloy's private collection forms the core of this scientific research library on Raoa Nui. Under the care and direction of the Easter Island Foundation, the library has made acquisitions to its original collection and continued to grow since Dr. Mulloy's death in 1978. In January of 2000, the Easter Island Foundation turned the entire collection over to the National Administration of Libraries, Archives, and Museums of Chile (Dirección de Bibiliotecas, Archivos y Museos). This Chilean governmental agency has re-catalogued the collection. The Library has been dedicated and is now operational.

The Secrets of Lost Empires: Easter Island

(video & DVD)

Narrated by Stacy Keach

NOVA assembles a team of archeologists, engineers, and local residents to test theories on moving and erecting Easter Island statues. Like the teams in the other parts of this NOVA series, this one had its share of difficulties and failures. Researchers struggled with theories and their applications (as well as each other), and limited time and resources — probably not unlike the ancient Easter Islanders.

Cousteau Odyssey 6:

Blind Prophets of Easter Island

(video)

With Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Phillippe Cousteau,
Georges Delerue, Theodore Strauss.

This is an exceptionally well made video, as were other parts of this Cousteau series which originally appeared on PBS. It contains a rare film interview with William Mulloy while he was doing a field study on Easter island.

Rapa-Nui
(video & DVD)

Starring Jason Scott Lee, Esai Morales (currently appearing as Head of Detectives on NYPD Blue), et al; directed by Kevin Reynolds.

Some describe it as interesting, others say it is too sensational to bring the known story of Easter Island culture to the masses (it is a Hollywood production, after all). Much controversy revolves around the impact of this film on island life and its effect on the island's treasures. See it if for no other reason than the Birdman competition sequence and Stewart Copeland's primal musical score.

    The Lessons of Easter Island

By Clive Ponting

A chapter excerpt from his A Green History of the World: The Environment and the Collapse of Great Civilizations.

Easter Island is one of the most remote, inhabited places on earth. Only some 150 square miles in area, it lies in the Pacific Ocean, 2,000 miles off the west coast of South America and 1,250 miles from the nearest inhabitable land of Pitcairn Island. At its peak the population was only about 7,000. Yet, despite its superficial insignificance, the history of Easter Island is a grim warning to the world.

The entire chapter can be found on this web page.

Easter Island Boat Voyage Gives Weight to Theory

By Fred Contrada

Union News - April 13, 2000

"Forty-four days after setting out from Arica, Chile, in a boat made of reeds, adventurer Phil Buck and his crew have arrived at Easter Island. A celebrated endeavor that captivated the country of Chile, the 3,500-mile voyage across the Pacific was part of an effort to show that ancient mariners could have colonized Polynesia from South America".
